German Carsharing Report 2025: Bundesverband Carsharing

Germany’s 2025 car sharing statistics are here—and the results show strong growth, increased electrification, and measurable climate impact. With 297 providers operating 45,400 vehicles across 1,393 municipalities, the market has grown by over 5% year-over-year. Notably, 20.9% of station-based fleets are electric, far outpacing the national average of 3.3%. Each shared vehicle replaces an average of 10.7 private cars, helping eliminate 174,600 vehicles and saving 234,000 tons of CO₂ annually. Car sharing continues to expand beyond major cities, with more than 1,230 smaller municipalities now offering services—proving its critical role in building more sustainable and efficient communities.

Portland Carsharing Parking Administrative Rules

Portland’s Carsharing Parking Administrative Rules establish a clear framework for carsharing organizations to operate and park vehicles within the city’s public right-of-way. Recognizing the environmental and mobility benefits of carsharing—such as reduced greenhouse gas emissions, decreased traffic congestion, and enhanced transportation options—the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) offers permits to qualified carsharing organizations.

Toronto Free-Floating Carshare Pilot and Interim Policy

In September 2017, the City of Toronto proposed a Free-Floating Car-Share Pilot and Interim Policy to integrate free-floating car-sharing services into the city’s transportation network. This initiative aimed to provide residents with flexible mobility options while addressing potential impacts on residential permit parking. The pilot outlined specific rules, conditions, and a temporary permitting system for car-share vehicles, reflecting Toronto’s commitment to sustainable transportation solutions.

Carsharing Policies: The City of Sydney

The City of Sydney’s Car Sharing Policy, established in 2011 and updated in 2016, aims to promote car sharing as a sustainable transportation option. Since installing the first dedicated car share parking space in 2008, the city has expanded to over 800 on-street spaces, accounting for approximately 2% of all kerbside parking. This initiative has led to more than 50,000 carshare memberships among residents and businesses, contributing to reduced car ownership.
